Have A Holly Jolly

And a quick little tutorial if you have a little extra moment to make an embellishment over the holiday season:

RVKC December Tutorial - Mini Paper Chains!

by Michelle Clement
We're all super busy as the holiday season approaches, right? I know I am! I wanted to make a super-quick handmade holiday embellishment for my seasonal pages, and, when thinking of something to make in a pinch, I just couldn't remember for the life of me how to make a paper chain! You know, those cool paper cut-out strings you make way back when in elementary school!! So, if you're craving a quick little embellishment that you can make in a snap, here's a fresh little update/how-to on how to adopt the old favorite for your scrapbook pages:

Step One: (You may want to practice this on a scrap piece of paper first to avoid messing up a good piece of patterned paper - I had to!) Cut a small strip of a piece of very lightweight patterned paper - the shimmering Hambly paper is perfect for this! It should be about 1.5 inches wide and a few inches long, and draw a small seasonal character/creature on the left hand side of it lightly using a pencil. Make sure the edges of the doodle can meet nicely at the edges of the paper for the chain to work - for example, you have hands or a nose and tail to connect to the next image in a row.

Step Two: Fold the strip of paper starting on the right hand side just at the edge of the image you drew: fold it under, and then when you get to the other side of the image, fold it under again, and repeat until the whole strip of paper is folded under your drawing. Depending on the thickness of the paper, you'll be able to get a few images, but you won't be able to cut through a whole stack with thick paper!

Step Three: Cut your doodle out based on the drawing through all of the paper layers - it can be a little tedious at tis smaller-than-usual size - making sure you cut off of the edge so that the images will be attached in a row. Unfold, and voila! A quick little paper chain to add to your scrapbook pages or cards - and if you're feeling adventurous, try making a cute 3 x 3 chain for your christmas tree - if you can't cut out a lot at one time, attach the strings together to form a bigger chain. Have fun! If you need a little inspiration, check out the cards and page I used my chains on! :)

Changes Come

Running Red Velvet Kit Club has been a treat. I've been honored to feature a variety of artistic Guest Designers and host a talented Design Team that never failed to bring out the best in each month's kit. I've enjoyed the loyalty of scrappers that have been with us from the start and appreciated every new subscriber along the way. If ever you've been a part of RVKC, I thank you.

However, (big sigh) the December kit marked the last scrapbook kit from our little club. After much thought and a few candid conversations with close friends, Brett and I have decided to close up shop and redirect our energies into a new business opportunity. We will no longer be managing all aspects of a small business but contributing to part of a larger one. I'm collaborating with Elsie Flannigan on craft kits that will be sold from her new online store, Red Velvet Art, which opens in February 2009.  We're excited about the chance to work together and hope you'll be just as thrilled with the craft kits we'll be putting out each month.  They will be available from her online store starting in February.

We're wrapping things up in January with a clearance sale to move out the last of the product on our shelves.  Previous kits, partial kits, and individual items will be on sale from January 2nd through January 9th, after which the remaining items will be donated.  With the economy affecting us all in different ways, its a great opportunity to get product at a greatly reduced price.

We're thankful for all the ways you've supported, encouraged and sometimes had to be patient with this little business over the months.  Most of all I want Michelle, Marie, Theresa and Jen to know how talented I think they are and how much they've made this kit club better.  You girls made this job so much easier.

On that note, stay tuned for Michelle's latest pages and a fun tutorial.  We'll post a reminder about the clearance sale later this week.  Most of all, have a wonderful holiday full of new memories to document.

Blessing to all,
Rachel and Brett

Challenge

Jen has a little challenge for you all. Paint on something unexpected. (Even better, recycle something in your home.) Jen found this piece of metal in her basement and used one of Rachel's lovely patterns from the December kit to make this metal holiday decoration for her fireplace. Use an old piece of wood, fabric, glass...anything goes!Merry christmas

Guest Designer Love

December is for sharing!

Kerrylynnyeary

Awhile back, we invited the lovely Kerry Lynn Yeary to be a GD for one of our winter months.  She not only agreed but proposed that we Guest Design for each other the same month.  I've long admired her work and was excited about the invitation to showcase the December kit from her new kit club, Kenner RoadKerry Lynn has an uncanny eye for vintage finds and puts together some of the best kits on the market.  We almost got to meet each other last year, at the Alameda Flea Market of all places, but fate did not allow.  It's a great excuse to head that direction next time we're in California!

Kenner Road kits premiere on the 15th of each month so keep your calender marked.  You won't want to miss out on this month's beautiful selection.

We've sold out of the December Kit but we've got a few from November if you're still catching up on your Fall scrapping. Keep your toes warm! ~Rachel

Let It Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow

Welcome to the December Kit from Red Velvet Kit Club.  We've included versatile elements this month to take your paper making projects beyond your album pages.  Use the snowflake stamp to decorate Kraft wrapping paper or use it as a stencil to make ornaments for your tree.  Print out the .pdf Joy pattern to make gift tags or embellishments for your holiday mini album.  Use the pine cone .pdf to make your own felt ornaments, tags, embellishments or a holiday garland.

Our Design Team and GD, KerryLynn will no doubt lead the way with their stylish creations to get your ideas flowing.  You can get yours here.
